John Bayly.
Mayor of Margate 1881 and 1882
Born Margate 1832.
Actively involved in public life at Margate; twice Mayor in 1881 and 1882.
From a young age actively involved in commercial pursuits, being in the profession of an auctioneer and estate agent, becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Auctioneers.
Served as a councillor for Marine Ward.
Elected on the first school board for the United District.
A Director of the Isle of Thanet Gas Company.
Chairman of the Margate Hoy Company that he was instrumental in founding.
A member of and agent for the Isle of Thanet Building Society.
Supported the Council in their endeavours to obtain legislative power for getting water from a distance of 16 miles from the town to prevent its contamination from the sea, known as the Wingham Scheme.

George Lansell was a cousin to John Bayly, and presented the Margate Mayoral Chain to the town in 1882.
